THE STAUMC has been an active mountaineering club since 1934. It has a current website here. It also has a facebook page.

I think it's fair to say that the STAUMC has a reputable tradition in the annals of Scottish Mountaineering, and indeed Polar mountaineering. There was a sort of cycle to the club year, with highlights including the Feich Trip at Hogmanay, originally in Glen Nevis, but then for many years at Glen Pean; the Easter Meet in the North-West, sometimes with a club dinner; and then the early June meet in Glen Brittle.

The social aspect of the club was a way of relaxing and balancing the serious intent of the climbing, and sometimes letting off steam. The club had a 7-metre long tent called 'The Nally' where people would crowd in on stormy nights. Music was a part of the club's tradition: a song book was put together, and guitars and accordians would be carried to remote bothies.

The STAUMC has evolved over the decades, each new generation bringing its own style and new adventures to the annals of this now 86-year-old club. There have also been a number of post-graduate clubs involving former STAUMC members, notably the Corriemulzie Club whose own history can be viewed here.

I am grateful to Ian Walton (Club President 1972-73) who worked out the guitar chords for all the songs in the Club Song Book, and from whose files the songs below have been reproduced with his kind permission. The first Club Song Book was put together in 1960. A second edition was compiled by Sarah Mason and Dave Gibson in 1970. The third edition in 1974 (from which the songs on this page have been reproduced) added songs collected by Jeanette Young, with group support from Helen Foord, Mary Gardner, Elspeth Good, John Cant, and Norman MacKenzie.
